Within AIRJ, there are two types of membership:
- Junior: Annual membership fee of 2,000 yen. This group includes students, PhD candidates, post-docs, scholarship recipients, or others in unpaid and non-permanent positions.
- Senior: Annual membership fee of 5,000 yen. This group includes all other types of positions not mentioned above. For example, full and associate professors, assistants, researchers with permanent positions at private institutions or government agencies, employees in the private sector, or any type of stable and continuous salaried position.
A member’s classification into one category or the other is based on their own declaration. The annual fee allows AIRJ to carry out its activities and cover the administrative costs of the Association (website, legal address maintenance, bank fees, etc.). The reduced fee of 2,000 yen is intended for students and individuals with limited financial resources who still wish to be part of the Association.
Voting rights in the general assembly are tied to the calendar year in which the membership fee is paid, and are therefore valid only until December 31 of the year in which the membership or renewal is completed. However, in order to allow those who join at the end of the year to still benefit from the Association’s services and participate in its activities, we grant the possibility to take part in events, be included in the members-only mailing list, and enjoy all member privileges—except voting rights in the assembly—until June 30 of the following year.
Example: registration/payment made on 17 September 2025 (the same example applies if the registration/payment is made on 17 March 2025, for example).
- Voting right valid until 31 December 2025 (note: the annual assembly is usually held in summer).
- Possibility to participate in events and be included in the mailing list until 30 June 2026. If the renewal is not completed by this date, all member benefits are lost. To exercise the right to vote at the 2026 general assembly or on any other occasion during 2026, the member must have paid the 2026 membership fee.
